Don’t Treat Your Lamborghini Like an Old Chevette

Hey guys,

I hope everyone is happy and healthy.

I found myself having a conversation about taking care of oneself. I came out with “If you don’t put the right care into your Lamborghini it will breakdown. Just as sure as an old Chevette will.”

I remember listening to an Olympic swimmer talk about nutrition. “If I don’t eat the food I need to perform and eat a pizza instead; it will show in my work the next day.” Sports nutrition, as I’ve learned, is about putting the specific nutritional requirements of your particular sport into your system. Also optimizing it for high calibre performance and improvement.

Most people aren’t high octane athletes. However, we all do have goals. Have more energy during the day, be able to play with my kids/grandkids, or getting my anxiety under control. Do you view your diet like that? Do you research the links between your lifestyle and your illnesses? No judgement either way.

It took me a long time to learn not to follow the fad diets that didn’t suit my personal needs, tastes, culture, and lifestyle. I learned through a couple courses and interviews with athletes that your diet needs to suit you. So I am creating and recreating my own. It is always changing and challenging. I still get the cravings for the ice cream sandwiches in the freezer. I’ll even open the door and reach on impulse. But, I worked hard to create a check for myself. “Before I engage in this behaviour, does it align with my goals.”.

Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn’t. Then I make a decision. No shame or judgement, I just have to live with it.

Be well,

Sensei Mike
